Ember fire prevention tips for Wood Village.

Our family loves to sit around the outdoor fire pit in the evening. One night a gust of wind came and blew some of the embers up and onto the decking above us, and a fire broke out. It happened so quickly. Although the Wood Village fire department responded quickly and extinguished the fire before it could spread to other parts of the house, there was still a lot of fire, smoke, soot, and water damage left from the firefighting efforts.

SERVPRO of Gresham and SERVPRO of Oregon City / Sandy responds to fire damage emergencies 24 hours a day and we clean and restore all kinds of property damage. • Do not store items that can ignite underneath of a deck
  • Increase the gap between deck boards from 1/8 inch to 1/4 inch

How to clean up after fire damage

9/21/2020 (Permalink)

Sadly, our state is seeing more than our normal share of fires and fire damage. Even homes and properties very far from fires are being effected by soot, smoke, and odor.

So, how do we clean after fires? Cleaning in fire damage restoration means removing smoke residues and removing smoke odors. We clean both in different ways to help eliminate lingering odor and permanent damage

Smoke Odors: Odor causing residues are removed, then restorers use a range of methods to remove odors, including Ozone treatments.

Smoke residues: Residues must be captured before they can be removed. Restorers use air and fluids to release and carry soils away.

Every Second Counts During a Fire

9/10/2018 (Permalink)

Fire experts agree; people have as little as two minutes to escape a burning home before it’s too late to get out.

In a matter of moments, a small flame can become a major fire, making it critical to be prepared and have an escape plan in place.  The American Red Cross suggests that families have a developed and practice a home fire escape plan. Here are a few suggestions to help you and your family to develop an emergency escape plan:

  • Draw a map of each level—Show all doors and windows. Find two ways to get out of each room. Make sure that all doors and windows that lead outside open easily.
  • Consider escape ladders—This is something to consider for sleeping areas on the second and third floors. Only purchase collapsible escape ladders evaluated by a recognized testing laboratory. Store them near the window where they will be used.
  • Choose an outdoor meeting place—Make sure the meeting place is a safe distance in front of your home, where everyone can meet after they’ve escaped. Make sure to mark the location of the meeting place on your escape plan.
  • Teach children—Teach them how to escape on their own in case you cannot help them. Plan for everyone in your home, with special considerations for elderly or disabled individuals.
  • Practice makes perfect—Practice your fire escape plan during the day and at nighttime, at least twice a year.

Fire Damage Restoration in Your Fairview Home

8/20/2018 (Permalink)

Gresham Fire Damage Restoration

A fire can be devastating to any Gresham home, causing severe fire damage, affecting its look and value. The restoration process is complex and requires the services of fire remediation experts like SERVPRO of Gresham.

The Fire Restoration Process

There are several techniques used to restore a home after a fire. The main goals are to remove anything that cannot be salvaged, extract all excess water, thoroughly dry everything and rebuild all damaged areas.

Water and Mold Issues

One of the effects of fire damage is the water left over after the fire is out. Furniture, drywall, floors, and carpets are soaked and provide a prime breeding ground for mold and mildew. SERVPRO utilizes large fans and powerful dehumidifiers to dry out your home in preparation for cleaning and rebuilding.

The Cooling and Heating System

The filter and coils of an HVAC system of a home are often blocked by soot and particulates from a fire. The parts must be replaced, and the cost depends on the amount of damage caused by smoke and heat. The ductwork must also be checked for soot buildup as it will cause problems if not removed.

Rebuilding the Home

A home that is left structurally unsound by fire damage will need to be reinforced and rebuilt. While this can done through independent contractors, the SERVPRO Gresham remediation service team can take care of the rebuilding process, reducing stress and worry for the homeowner.

Removal of Damaged Items

Part of the fire restoration process is the removal of anything that cannot be saved. If smoke-damaged items are allowed to remain, they may contaminate the home. SERVPRO may be able to help with salvageable items or can make recommendations for their repair.

A fire is a sudden, disruptive life event and working with a professional fire remediation service like SERVPRO is the fastest way to clean and restore a home. Our experts will get things back to normal with minimal stress to the homeowner and will often cost less than hiring additional contractors. Most home insurance policies will pay for at least part of the remediation costs.

The restoration process begins when you call us. Our representative will ask questions regarding the fire damage event that will help us respond immediately with the appropriate equipment and resources.

We carefully inspect and test adjoining rooms of your property to determine the extent of the fire, smoke, and soot damage. This step is crucial to developing a plan of action.

Step 3: Immediate Board-Up and Roof-Tarp Service

Fire damage can often compromise windows, walls, and roofs. To maintain security and to protect against further damage, we can board up missing windows and walls and place tarps on damaged roofs.

The water removal process begins almost immediately and removes the majority of the water. We then use dehumidifiers and air movers to remove the remaining water and complete the drying process.

We use specialized equipment and techniques to remove smoke and soot from ceilings, walls, and other surfaces.

Step 7: Restoration

2/27/2018 (Permalink)

As a result, there are different types of soot residue after a fire. SERVPRO of Gresham professionals are thoroughly trained in fire cleanup and restoration and know the different types of smoke and their behavior patterns. Do you know how electrical fires can start in your North Gresham home?

2/20/2018 (Permalink)

Electrical fires can happen at any time of year but are more prominent in winter months.

The months with the most electrical fires are December and January due to increased use of heating appliances and lights. Most electrical fires start in the bedroom, but the highest number of fatalities occurs with fires located in the living room, family room and den. The most common electrical fires are caused by the following:

  1. Faulty outlets/appliances: Most electrical fires are caused by faulty electrical outlets and old, outdated appliances. Other fires are started by faults in appliance cords, receptacles, and switches.
  2. Light Fixtures: Light fixtures, lamps and light bulbs are another common reason for electrical fires. Installing a bulb with a wattage that is too high for the lamps and light fixtures is a leading cause of electrical fires.
  3. Extension Cords: Misuse of extension cords is another electrical fire cause. Appliances should be plugged directly into an outlet and not plugged into an extension cord for any length of time. Only use extension cords as a temporary measure.
  4. Space Heaters: Many times people put space heaters too close to combustible surfaces such as curtains, beds, clothing, chairs, couches, and rugs. Coil space heaters are especially dangerous in this regard because the coils become so hot they will almost instantaneously ignite any nearby flammable surface.
  5. Wiring: Outdated wiring often causes electrical fires. If a home is over 20 years old, it may not have the wiring capacity to handle the increased amounts of electrical appliances in today’s average home, such as computers, wide-screen televisions, video and gaming players, microwaves and air conditioners.

Have You Heard of Home Fire Sprinklers?

We’ve seen them in commercial and industrial properties and public buildings, but did you know you can get fire sprinklers installed inside your home? 85% of all US fire deaths occur inside the home*; installing an automatic fire sprinkler could save your life. There is an 80 percent reduction in the risk of occupants dying in a fire when fire sprinklers are present. Additionally, there is a 70 percent reduction in direct property damage per fire.* On top of reducing fire damages, fire sprinklers are cost effective. A report commissioned by the Fire Protection Research Foundation places the average national cost of installing sprinklers in new homes at $1.35 per square foot, or about one percent of the total construction cost.

Don't let a Fire Get in The Way of Your Fourth of July Fun!

According to the National Fire Protection Association, fireworks cause an estimated 18,500 fires a year. Many of these fires could have been avoided by taking the proper safety precautions!

The best way to stay safe this firework season is to go to a firework show put on by professionals. If you can't resist  lighting some off at home, here are the recommended safety tips from National Council on Firework Safety:

  • Obey all local laws regarding the use of fireworks.
  • Know your fireworks; read the cautionary labels and performance descriptions before igniting.
  • A responsible adult SHOULD supervise all firework activities.  Never give fireworks to children.
  • Alcohol and fireworks do not mix.  Save your alcohol for after the show.
  • Wear safety glasses when shooting fireworks.
  • Light one firework at a time and then quickly move away.
  • Use fireworks OUTDOORS in a clear area; away from buildings and vehicles.
  • Never relight a “dud” firework.  Wait 20 minutes and then soak it in a bucket of water.
  • Always have a bucket of water and charged water hose nearby.
  • Never carry fireworks in your POCKET or shoot them into METAL or GLASS containers.
  • Do not experiment with homemade fireworks.

Keep Gresham Safe with these Campfire Safety Tips!

5/31/2017 (Permalink)

SERVPRO of Gresham wants to keep you safe this camping season

It's that time of the year again, camping season! SERVPRO of Gresham wants to keep you and your family safe by providing some tips on how to pick a campfire spot, prepare and build your fire, and extinguish it!

How to Pick a Campfire Spot

  1. DO NOT build a campfire if the campground, area or event rules prohibit them.
  2. DO NOT build a campfire in hazardous, dry conditions.
  3. Find Out if the campground has an existing fire ring or fire pit.
  4. If there is not an existing fire pit, and pits are allowed, choose a site at least 15 feet from tent walls, shrubs, trees or other flammable objects. Beware of low-hanging branches.
  5. Choose an open, level location away from fuels such as logs, brush or decaying leaves.
  6. Take wind, and its direction, into account when choosing the site. Choose a spot that’s protected from gusts.

How to Prepare your Campfire Pit

  1. Clear a 10-foot-diameter area around the site. Remove any grass, twigs, leaves and firewood.
  2. Dig a pit in the dirt, about a foot deep.
  3. Circle the pit with rocks.
  4. Your campfire pit is built and ready for building a campfire!

How to Build Your Campfire

  1. Make sure you have a source of water, a bucket and shovel nearby at all times.
  2. Gather three types of wood from the ground. Never cut whole trees or branches, dead or alive. Live materials won’t burn, and you’ll be damaging the forest. Dead standing trees often are homes for birds and other wildlife.
    1. Tinder: Small twigs and dry leaves grass and needles.
    2. Kindling: Sticks smaller than 1″ around.
    3. Fuel: Larger pieces of wood. Keep these stacked upwind, away from the fire.
  3. Loosely pile a few handfuls of tinder in the center of the fire pit.
  4. Ignite the tinder with a match or lighter.
  5. Wait until the match is cold, and discard it into the fire.
  6. Add kindling and fuel, the larger firewood, as it grows and to keep it going.
  7. Keep the fire small and under control.

How to Extinguish your Campfire

  1. Allow the wood to burn completely to ash, if possible.
  2. Pour lots of water on the fire. Drown ALL embers, not just the red ones. Pour until hissing sound stops.
  3. If you do not have water, stir dirt or sand into the embers with a shovel to bury the fire.
  4. With your shovel, scrape any remaining sticks and logs to remove any embers. Make sure that no embers are exposed and still smoldering.
  5. Continue adding water, dirt or sand and stirring with a shovel until all material is cool.
  6. Remember: If it’s too hot to touch, it’s too hot to leave. Pack it in, Pack it out. It is your responsibility to pack out everything that you packed in, including any trash.

5/23/2017 (Permalink)

Tips for a fire escape plan in your Fairview household

The following are several tips that could potentially save your life or the life of a loved one should a fire break out in your home or business:

  • Test smoke alarm batteries every month and change them at least once a year.
  • Consider installing a 10-year lithium battery-powered smoke alarm.

  • Remember to escape first, and then notify the fire department.

What you can do until help arrives:

 DO:

  • Limit movement in the home to prevent soot particles from spreading and additional damage from occurring.
  • Place clean towels or old linens on rugs and high traffic areas and upholstery.
  • Coat chrome faucets, trim and appliances with petroleum jelly or oil.
  • Place aluminum foil or wood blocks between furniture legs and wet carpet.

DO NOT:

Fire Safety Tips for Troutdale Home and Business Owners

5/8/2017 (Permalink)

Fire prevention tips for Multnomah County households and offices

Though some fires are unavoidable acts of nature or unpredictable accidents, many fires in the home and workplace are avoidable. The following tips can help reduce the likelihood of a fire in your business or home.

1. Watch your cooking - Stay in the kitchen if you are frying, grilling or broiling food. Never allow young children around the stove or oven, especially if they are not closely attended.

2. Give space heaters space - Keep space heaters at least three feet from anything that can burn.

3. Smoke outside - If you must smoke inside, have a sturdy, deep ashtray. Never smoke in bed.

4. Keep matches and lighters out of reach - Keep matches and lighters in high cabinets, preferably under a child lock.

5. Inspect electrical cords - Replace cords that are cracked, damaged, have broken plugs or have loose connections.

6. Be careful when using candles - Keep candles at least one foot from anything that can burn. Blow them out before you leave the room or go to sleep.

7. Have a fire escape plan - Make a fire escape plan and practice it at least twice a year.

8. Install smoke alarms - Install alarms on every level of your office or home and inside bedrooms. Interconnect them so they all sound at once.

9. Test smoke alarms - Test alarms once per month. Replace batteries once per year or as needed.

10. Install sprinklers - Sprinklers can help maintain and sometimes even extinguish fires, giving your local fire department a better chance of saving your property.

Exhaust Fan Fire- Who would have thought!

9/28/2016 (Permalink)

When speaking to one of our local Property Managers here in Gresham, I was told a so called fact that I was surprised about. She stated that there are two number one causes of fires in apartments. (or at least these are the two that she has come by in her career) One is the dryer vents in your laundry rooms. She stated over the years that she has seen and heard of several fires stemming from vents that had not been cleaned in years. This make sense, we clean the small vent out each time we put a clean load of laundry in the dryer. The second was the exhaust fans in the bathrooms. How many times have you cleaned your bathroom and not looked up to see if the exhaust vent needed dusting. I know I am guilty! SERVPRO of Gresham works with many Property Managers in our area. We hope they read our blogs and if they have already call to get your dryer vents and bathroom exhausts cleaned. We love coming to visit you, but for the safety of everyone living and visiting your apartment complex, get it schedule today!

Deep Fried Turkey Safety Already- It Is October!

9/28/2016 (Permalink)

Yes, my friends it is that time of the year again. The holidays are right around the corner. Is your mouth watering because you are thinking of the delicious turkey you may be having next month? Well, if you are going to deep fry it, please be careful and follow the manufacturers instructions. Garage fires can spread quickly through your home. If you are going to deep fry your turkey this year, be sure to do it outside of your garage. Also, please make sure you practice other garage safety habits such as storing your flammable substances in a fire safe container. If you spill gasoline, soak it up with sawdust or cat litter. Be sure to put the remains in a safe container after the spill has been absorbed. Do not use anything flammable over a throw rug or cardboard on your garage floor. Be sure to install the proper ceiling if you have an apartment above your garage or if you garage is connected to your house.

Home Fires and Children

9/28/2016 (Permalink)

When a home fire happens, it is important to know what to do. Most children don’t know what to do to escape a fire safely. Here are a few things that can help you learn what to do when there is a fire:

Make an escape plan for everyone in your household. Be sure to decide on an outside meeting place for all household members to go after leaving the house. Practice fire drills with children. Practice meeting them at the meeting place.Teach them to not open doors if they see smoke or fire coming from it. If they are trapped in a room, open a window and yell for help. If they have a phone in that room they can call 911 also. Children may have learned "Stop, Drop and Roll" at school. Remind that this is what they do if their clothing or any part of them catches fire.

SERVPRO of Gresham is active in the community. We attend National Night Out's and hand out Fire Safety Booklets to children. We have prizes if they can answer simple questions about what to do in case of a fire in your home.

Fire safety with children is very important. Be sure to talk to your children and practice everything today. It can save their lives.

Smoke and soot is very invasive and can penetrate various cavities within your home, causing hidden damage and odor. SERVPRO of Gresham's smoke damage expertise and experience allows us to inspect and accurately assess the extent of the damage to develop a comprehensive plan of action.

Different Types of Smoke

There are two different types of smoke–wet and dry. As a result, there are different types of soot residue after a fire. Before restoration begins, SERVPRO of Gresham will test the soot to determine which type of smoke damage occurred. The cleaning procedures will then be based on the information identified during pretesting. Here is some additional information:

Wet Smoke – Plastic and Rubber

·         Low heat, smoldering, pungent odor, sticky, smeary. Smoke webs are more difficult to clean.

Dry Smoke – Paper and Wood

·         Fast burning, high temperatures, heat rises therefore smoke rises.

Protein Fire Residue – Produced by evaporation of material rather than from a fire

·         Virtually invisible, discolors paints and varnishes, extreme pungent odor.

Propane Grills

6/28/2016 (Permalink)

Check the gas tank hose for leaks before using it for the first time each year. Apply a Light soap and water solution to the hose. A propane leak will release bubbles. If your grill has a gas leak, by smell or the soapy bubble test, and there is no flame, turn off the gas tank and grill. If the leak stops, get the grill serviced by professional before using it again. If the leak does not stop, call the fire department. If you smell gas while cooking immediately get away from the grill and call the fire department. Do not move the grill. If the flame goes out, turn the grill and gas off and wait at least 15 minutes before re-lighting it. FACTS: July is the peak month for Grill fires – roughly half of the injuries involving grills are thermal burns.
