Pool Safety In East Side

6/14/2018 (Permalink)

Pool Safely Tips and Facts from Your Local SERVPRO of Gresham

When summer brings the heat crashing into your daily routine, a pool is a great way to cool off and break up the dog days of summer.

Swimming pools and other water features on your property require regular maintenance and awareness of safety when friends and family, particularly small children, are swimming in your pool.

If your pool causes water damage to your East Side property, SERVPRO of Gresham has a team of highly trained professionals who can restore your property back to pre-damage condition.

Don’t forget to be safe! Parents should be supervising any young children who don’t have strong swimming skills. Most drowning deaths among young children happen at times when parents are nearby, but the children are not properly supervised. Never leave your child or their friends unattended around water. Infants and children under the age of 2 can drown in as little as one inch of water. Enrolling your children in year-round swim lessons at your local swimming pool is the best way to prevent drowning accidents in the future.

Keeping Pets Safe in Fairview House Fires

Gresham home fire tips to keep your furry family safe!

July 15, 2017 is National Pet Fire Safety Day! The following are tips to prevent fires that pets may cause and what to have to be prepared for an emergency.

Prevention:

  • Extinguish open flames: Pets are generally curious and investigate open flames such as candles.
  • “Baby proof” your home: When your pet is left unattended, consider keeping them confined from potential fire It is advised to keep pets in a crate or behind baby gates to secure the area. Some pets, especially puppies and kittens, will chew electrical cords or loose wire when left alone.
  • Remove or lock stove knobs: According to the National Fire Protection Association, a stove or cooktop is the #1 piece of equipment involved in your pet starting a fire.
  • Remove glass water bowls from wooden decks: The rays of sun, when filtered through glass water bowl, may ignite the wooden deck below. Instead, use bowls made from ceramic or stainless steel.

Be prepared for an emergency:

  • Get a rescue alert sticker: These stickers should be placed on a front-facing window, and will alert rescue workers of the presence of pets in your home.
  • Arrange a safe place to house your pets after an emergency: Local and state safety and health regulations do not allow pets to be housed in Red Cross Disaster shelters. Keep a list of pet friendly places to stay. These could be with: friends, relatives, pet-friendly hotels, boarding facilities, or veterinarians.
  • Make sure your pet is wearing proper identification: There is a chance your pet may be lost following a disaster. Make sure your pet wears up to date contact information at all times.

Make an emergency preparedness kit:

Have a kit made and keep it in a safe place, either by the door or in your car. Your kit should include supplies for up to seven days.

  • Medication and medical records
  • Leashes, hardness or carrier
  • Current photo in case your pet gets lost
  • Bedding and toys
  • Bowls, cat litter, and litter pan
  • Emergency contact information
  • Food, bottled water, and a can opener

Boating Safety Tips for Troutdale

6/6/2017 (Permalink)

The suns out in Gresham, which means that boats are out too!

With the nice weather come all the fun summer activities, including boating! The following tips are here to keep you and your family safe this summer while out on your boat.

  1. Check the Forecast

Be sure to check local weather conditions before heading out on the water. If you notice darkening clouds, rough changing winds or sudden drops in temperature, play it safe by getting off the water.

  1. Follow a Pre-Departure Checklist

Proper boating safety includes being prepared for any possibility on the water.

  1. Use Common Sense

An extremely important part of boating safety is to use your common sense. This means operating at a safe speed at all times and staying alert, Also, be respectful of buoys and other navigational aids, which have been placed there to ensure your safety.

  1. Have an Assistant

Make sure more than one person on board is familiar with all aspects of your boat’s handling, operations, and general boating safety. If the primary navigator is injured or incapacitated in any way, it’s important to make sure someone else can to get everyone else back to shore.

  1. Create a Float Plan

Whether you choose to inform a family member or staff at your local marina, always be sure to let someone else know your float plan. This should include where you’re going and how long you’re going to be gone.

  1. Wear or Bring Lifejackets

Many drowning can be prevented by wearing a lifejacket. Make sure that each member on the boat has an assigned and fitted lifejacket aboard before getting out on the water.

  1. Avoid Alcohol

Practice boating safety at all times by saving the alcohol for later.

  1. Learn to Swim

If you’re going to be in and around the water, proper boating safety includes knowing how to swim. Local organizations, such as the American Red Cross and others, offer training for all ages and abilities. Check to see what classes are offered in your area.

  1. Take a Boating Course

Beginning and experience boaters alike need to be familiar with the boating safety rules of operation. You can learn boating safety rules by taking a local community course or online course to help educate yourself.

  1. Consider a Free Vessel Safety Check

Take advantage of a free vessel safety check from the US Coast Guard. They offer complimentary boat examinations to verify the presence and condition of certain safety equipment required by state and federal regulations. Free of charge, they’ll provide a specialist to check out your boat and make helpful boating safety tips and recommendations. They also offer virtual online safety checks as well.

Restoration Technologies at SERVPRO of Gresham

12/9/2016 (Permalink)

SERVPRO of Gresham has the technology to get the job done!

The past few decades has seen a rapid advancement in the technology and techniques used in the restoration industry. These advancements allow SERVPRO of Gresham Professionals to restore a property back to preloss condition quickly, reliably, and more effectively.

Moisture Detection and Measurement Equipment

Scientific drying principles rely upon specialized equipment to detect, measure, and monitor a property’s moisture levels. Recent advances, like infrared cameras, can help us detect water through a wall, ceiling, or floor.

  • An infrared camera may be used to identify water location for thorough water removal.
  • Sensitive moisture detectors, hygrometers, and other meters measure the extent of moisture saturation

Water Extraction Equipment

Powerful extraction equipment speeds the drying process by removing the bulk of the water from your home or business.

  • Submersible and gas-powered pumps for continuous pumping of high-level water.
  • Truck-mounted and portable extraction units perform efficient water removal.

Drying Equipment

Industrial strength air movers and dehumidifiers are needed to remove the remaining moisture from ceiling, walls, and floors of your home or business. Proper drying helps to prevent swelling and warping of floors, walls, and furniture.

  • High-speed air movers causes moisture to evaporate at a faster pace
  • Industrial grade dehumidifiers pull the water vapor from the air.

Odor Removal and Deodorization

Water and fire damage often causes powerful odors. The machines we use remove airborne contaminants and control the air quality during the restoration and cleanup process.

  • Air scrubbers
  • Thermal foggers and deodorization agents

Sanitizing Agents, Germicides, and Anti-Microbial Treatments

The use of OSHA-approved cleaning agents may be needed to clean and remove odors and/or contaminants on your property.

  • Deodorization products control odors from excessive moisture.
  • Disinfection products stop the growth of bacteria, fungi, mildew, and other harmful microorganisms.

25 Years in Gresham

9/28/2016 (Permalink)

This upcoming January 2017, Dennis and Ellen Mesford will have independently owned and operated SERVPRO of Gresham. Way back in 1991, they decided to go on this adventure together so they could help their community members when in need. They have been members of many local associations over the years. They have contributed to all of the local schools in the Gresham area and the East Side. SERVPRO of Gresham has been a great attribute to the Gresham community. Data from the U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics, released Sept. 18, says that as of January 2012, the median time that wage and salary workers had been with their current employers was just 4.6 years. This is a terrible trend. A wonderful thing about being open for 25 years, is our company can have employees that have been staffed here for a long long time.

We, the employees of SERVPRO of Gresham, would like to thank Dennis and Ellen for a wonderful 25 years!

Look for our celebration come the New Year! Cheers to another 25 years!

Mosquito Control Around Your Home

7/18/2016 (Permalink)

Learn How to Protect Your Home from Becoming a Mosquito Breeding Ground

Many of the mosquitoes found around your home have bred on or around your or your neighbor’s property. Mosquitoes require standing water for their production. Eliminating standing water early in the spring will reduce the production of those summer mosquitoes. Here are a few ideas for searching out and eliminating potential breeding grounds for mosquitoes:

Keep bird baths and ornamental ponds clean. In warm weather, change water weekly.

Remove leaves from gutters so water will flow freely. Fill or drain puddles, ditches and swampy areas.

Eliminate standing water around animal watering troughs.

Check around faucets and air conditioner units and repair leaks and eliminate puddles that remain for several days.

Dispose of, or store in a dry place, any cans, bottles, tires, and any other containers that hold water.

Cover boats or store upside down or in a dry place.

Where feasible, fill all holes in the trees on your property.

When swimming season is over, empty and store wading pools in a dry place. Cover large pools and check frequently to insure against mosquito breeding. Pool chemicals like chlorine, at ordinary concentrations, will not kill mosquito larvae.

Remember; Elimination of standing water must be done no later than early April to reduce later mosquito problems. Continue to monitor potential breeding grounds throughout the summer.

Facts:

There are over 3300 species of mosquitoes worldwide. It is responsible for more human deaths than any other living creature (source: Metropolitan Mosquito Control District, St. Paul, MN).

There are 48 known species of mosquitoes in Oregon. Several of the species found in Oregon can carry disease under the right conditions.

All mosquitoes must have water in which to complete their life cycle.

Only female mosquitoes suck blood.

The males feed only on plant juices.

It takes as few as 7 days in warm weather for a mosquito to complete its life cycle (egg to adult).

The female mosquito may live as long as 3 weeks during the summer. She can also live many months over the winter in order to lay her eggs the following spring.

Splash Away the Summer Blues

7/18/2016 (Permalink)

School is out for the summer, and if your kids are like mine, its only day three of summer vacation and you are already hearing the dreaded words "I'm bored!" Let me say - kudos to teachers everywhere for keeping these little guys entertained for over 7 hours a day! Because the last thing you want to do is have them sit in front of the television, computer, or video game console all summer - now is the time to make a plan!

Over the past three decades, childhood obesity rates in America have tripled, and today, nearly one in three children in America are overweight or obese. It is recommended that kids get at least 60 minutes of physical activity each day. Why not spend those 60 minutes splashing in the pool this summer? Swimming pools are an outstanding resource for getting your kids to exercise during the summer months. Kids love to play in the water and probably won’t even realize that they are getting at great workout at the same time! (And from my experience, water play REALLY tires them out - think naps!!!)

We have some really great pool games available here on SwimmingPool.com, but here are a few of my favorites:

Hold a scavenger hunt in the pool. There are many different pool toys that float or sink. Throw several toys in the pool while your child is not looking. Instruct them to swim, dive and float to retrieve all of the toys. The kids will get plenty of exercise and have fun while doing it. You can continue this exercise until your child has been swimming and fetching toys for at least 30 minutes.

Create some relay races in the pool for a fun workout. Have the kids jump into the pool, fetch some rings, paddle on a raft and swim over pool noodles and through some inner tubes. The first kid to touch the other side of the pool after finishing all of these obstacles is the winner. The great part about this activity is that you can perform any type of relay race by using objects you already have in your home or near your pool.

Have the kids create a whirlpool. Line the kids up along the inside edge of the pool. Have them all run in a clockwise direction for five minutes. At this point, the water’s current should be flowing strong enough to push them along. When you give the signal, have them turn around and try to swim in the opposite direction. This will take some time and a substantial amount of effort. Walking and running against the resistance is a great way to work their muscles. Safety note: this type of activity should only be attempted in an in-ground or above ground pool – not an inflatable pool. If attempted in an inflatable pool, the sides could possibly collapse, causing possible injury.

You don't really need expensive toys or equipment - inexpensive pool noodles or a beach ball will work great. The most important thing to remember is that children should never swim alone in a pool without adult supervision. Be sure to enforce pool safety with children at all times.

Firework Safety Tips

6/28/2016 (Permalink)

Fireworks can be great fun. Unfortunately, every year, people get hurt because they fool around with fireworks. Last year over 900 people required hospital treatment from accidents involving fireworks. Make sure you’re not one of them by following these few simple rules.

Never play with fireworks - They are explosives and can hurt you.

Only adults should light or hold fireworks.

When you are watching fireworks stand well back.

Never go near a firework that has been lit. Even if it hasn’t gone off, it could still explode.

Fireworks will frighten your pets, so keep your pets safely indoors.

If you are given a sparkler: Always wear gloves. Hold it at arm’s length. When your sparkler goes out, DON’T TOUCH IT. It could still burn you, so put it in a bucket of water.
