Home Fires and Children

9/28/2016 (Permalink)

When a home fire happens, it is important to know what to do. Most children don’t know what to do to escape a fire safely. Here are a few things that can help you learn what to do when there is a fire:

Make an escape plan for everyone in your household. Be sure to decide on an outside meeting place for all household members to go after leaving the house. Practice fire drills with children. Practice meeting them at the meeting place.Teach them to not open doors if they see smoke or fire coming from it. If they are trapped in a room, open a window and yell for help. If they have a phone in that room they can call 911 also. Children may have learned "Stop, Drop and Roll" at school. Remind that this is what they do if their clothing or any part of them catches fire.

SERVPRO of Gresham is active in the community. We attend National Night Out's and hand out Fire Safety Booklets to children. We have prizes if they can answer simple questions about what to do in case of a fire in your home.

Fire safety with children is very important. Be sure to talk to your children and practice everything today. It can save their lives.
